4 Reasons to Choose a Roll Top Ute Cover Over a Hard Lid

Utes provide cargo space that goes above and beyond what most vehicles can offer, and many owners make the most of that space by adding a cover. Of course, there isn't just one type of cover, with two of the most popular being roller lids and hard lids.

While roller lids can be retracted much like a roller shutter, hard lids open much like a regular boot lid. They both have their own pros and cons, but roller lids will generally prove the better option. Here are just four reasons why.

1. Provides Unencumbered Access

One of the best things about roll-top ute covers is that it almost feels like no cover is present once they have been fully opened. Once retracted, you'll enjoy unencumbered access to the cargo area from all sides. The same can't be said when you opt for a hard lid. Since the lid itself will always be in the way to some extent, you can't add or remove items with as much ease, especially from the sides.

2. Ideal for All Settings

One issue people often run into with hard ute lids is that they cannot be used when overheard space is restricted. Most utes will already rise higher from the ground than standard vehicles, so opening the hard lid even higher can be tricky. This is often especially problematic if a ute needs to be loaded in a parking area of a home garage. In contrast, a roll top can be opened and closed regardless of how much space is available.

3. Easier to Open

Most people will be able to open a hard lid, but it's definitely not as easy as rolling open a roll top. Some hard lids are extremely heavy, so they can be troublesome when you don't have both hands free. They also aren't ideal for older drivers. Roll tops are much easier to open, and many of the latest ones can be opened electrically from a remote or even from your smartphone. Even if you're perfectly capable of opening the heaviest of hard lids, it makes sense to go for the more convenient option.

4. Can Be Open While Driving

Finally, it's worth keeping in mind that utes generally cannot be driven with an open hard lid, and that can be a problem if you need to carry taller or bulkier items. In fact, it can make carrying them either impossible or unsafe, but you won't need to worry when you go for a roll-top cover. Since they don't project upwards to block cargo or sway up and down as you drive, you can leave them open enough to accommodate larger items while still being able to drive safely.
